Head Teacher and Music Director - Wanzhe Zhang

Chinese Soprano Wanzhe Zhang is acknowledged as one of today’s evocative young artists in the United States as well as in China. A certified Music and Mandarin teacher from China's Ministry of Education, Ms. Zhang was a winner of the YCTV Vocal Competition, and was awarded several Scholarships for both her undergraduate and graduate studies. As an opera singer, Ms. Zhang played many roles from the operas Turandot, Die Fledermaus, Le Nozze di Figaro, Die Zauberflöte, Madama Butterfly, Don Giovanni, La Boheme, Iolanta, Le roi d'Ys, Dido and Aeneas. Her voice has been heard in hallmark venues across the globe, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Beijing Concert Hall, the Goldsail Concert Hall, the Great Hall of the People, the Forbidden City Concert Hall, the National Centre for the Performing Arts, Poly Theatre, the Shanghai Oriental Art Center, Xinghai Concert Hall and Boston’s Jordan Hall. Her well-rounded performing arts background includes five years of vocal studies under world renowned tenor Haitao Hei for her Bachelor’s Degree of Arts in Voice and Opera Performance at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. In addition, Ms. Zhang furthered her studies with American Soprano Karen Holvik, earning her Master’s Degree in Music in Vocal Performance at New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, MA. For the past seven years, Ms. Zhang has worked as a freelance vocal coach for numerous musical establishments. Alongside other projects, Ms. Zhang continues to coach singers of all levels and stages to develop their vocal confidence and artistry. Many of her pupils go on to study at the major music conservatories and pursue their musical goals.
Huji Dai (On Maternity Leave 2013-2014)

Ms. Huji Dai, a certified Music and Mandarin teacher from China's Ministry of Education, received her Masters in Music Education from Shenandoah Conservatory and her Bachelors in Music Education from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Ms. Dai is also the recipient of the prestigious “Fei Mingyi Award” which recognizes outstanding academic achievement at the Shanghai Conservatory. She received training in music theory, voice, piano performance and instrument studies. In particular, she is trained in music teaching methods and pedagogy, and attended the "Orff Approach Master Class" by Professor Wolfgang Harman, a music educator and former associate president of the German Orff Schulwerk association. Orff Schulwerk is a series of approaches that include singing, chanting rhymes, clapping, dancing, and keeping a beat on anything near at hand to foster creativity and convey musical knowledge and skills. Ms. Dai taught music education using the Orff method for six years at Shanghai Conservatory right after her graduation.
At Shenandoah Conservatory, Ms. Dai studied with Dr. David Zerull to explore music education in multicultural context, and the intrinsic power of music in communication among children from different backgrounds. Ms. Dai also systematically learned musical curriculum design and assessment which is important in tailoring personalized courses for children.
Ms. Dai believes that every child possesses certain degrees of musical aptitude with the potential for musical achievement. She also believes that appropriate music instruction effectively maximizes each child’s music potential and achievement. In 2012, Ms. Dai joined Focal Chinese Music to coach music literacy, choral, piano and Chinese.
